This tutorial is mainly for my students at The Norwegian Academy of Music but everyone is welcome. Its not a complete tutorial, its intended as a support for the students at the academy, but it can be used as a self study. If you have any comments or suggestions please e-mail me.
I prefer positive an constructive comments :-) after all I'm doing this for free (its not a part of my work at the academy to produce tutorials on the internet) .

Mats Claesson`s guide to Kontakt 2.

Introduction.

These pages work with Explorer 6.0 or higher.

If you are one of those computer musicians that demands instant response, 1000 of "wicked techno sounds" by the press of a button, stay away , this is NOT for you.

This is all about the BASIC programming of Kontakt 2, how to do it.
NOTHING ELSE !

Kontakt 2 is a great program!
The Kontakt version this tutorial is based on is v. 2.02 and I'm working on a PC.
Even if I think Kontakt is the best sampler its not free from annoying fault, the worst being that its not a fully developed, mature, program. During the last couple of weeks working with Kontakt . I have hade at least one serious crash that forced me to reinstall the program, I cant remember when that happened to me last, must be years ago.
The Kontakt forum have more than its fair share of users that are pretty upset. As it is now (13/10 2005) it seems like some of the criticism is justified. Last update was in June and the most obvious problems should have been addressed a long time ago. But then native instruments are as bad as anyone else.......

I use Kontakt because Its the most flexible sampler I know of. I would go as far as to say its not a just sampler its a sound manipulation instrument, an instrument of its own.

I'm sure that the friendly (?) guys at Native instrument will do something about the obvious programming shortcomings and when they are fixed, Kontakt 2 will truly become a magnificent sampler :- )

Kontakt 2 is not an easy program to work with, its very complex and can do much more than any other sampler available today. So if you are in search of something easy to work with ( just playing pre recorded sound) you should stop here.

In this tutorial I use Cubase SX as the host for Kontakt 2. Kontakt is used as a VST plug in and not as a standalone program.

This tutorial has some very large videos.
You need Quick time to view the videos, download it here. The videos is integrated in the pages and will be downloaded with the page.
There are almost 200 Mb, spread on 30 videos, some of them are long, over 8 minutes. If you use a modem it will take ages to download.

The videos are not heavily edited. They contains (to mention some) bad grammar, inconsistency, a terrible accent t in the videos) and even some fault.

I really appreciate comments. I have gotten quite a few so far. I appreciate to hear from you all. Up to now only 10% gives feedback.
Its a bit....sad. An e- mail from you is the only "payment" I would like. So please send an e-mail and tell me that you where looking at these pages (and maybe some comments?). And wicked techno sounds-guys. I told you, this is not what you are looking for :-)

Okay, I have read the text above and I'm not one of the "wicked techno sounds-guys" so please take me to the course!

Short cuts.
-Part 1 basics
-Part 2 Next level.
-Part 3 The fun stuff
-Part 4 The really really fun stuff.
